Volvo Group Tool Design Engineer Manager in Macungie, Pennsylvania


The purpose of this position is to manage the team responsible for the development and implementation of tooling and equipment, tooling and equipment standards, equipment life cycle management and to coordinate changes in support of daily manufacturing goals. Also, to further develop the team in terms of technical and interpersonal skills.

Core Responsibilities:

Manage a team of Tooling & Equipment (T&E) Engineers and tooling fabricators that have the job to:

  • Gather inputs from production and work cross functionally to develop tooling and equipment to support safe and efficient assembly of trucks

  • Work with internal and external fabricators to manufacture fixtures and assembly aids

  • Work with internally developed tool request system to provide status of tool development process

  • Participate in Product Change project and Industrial Projects to support needs of tooling and equipment

  • Support maintenance team in development of technical solutions to problems with existing equipment

  • Work with maintenance team in the development of tooling and equipment standards to ensure new equipment design incorporates best practices from previous implementations and input from AB Volvo global experts

  • Promotes manufacturing safety and efficiency through implementation of method/process change, ergonomic application and safety awareness

  • Facilitate/Participate in detailed design reviews of new tooling and equipment

  • Set clear goals and time lines for individual and team deliverables

  • Analyses and continuously evaluates and improves Tooling & Equipment (TE) process to gain efficiency and effectiveness in execution through observation, investigation and problem solving techniques

  • Identifies opportunities for cost reductions through tooling and equipment improvements

  • Identifies current and needed competencies for tooling engineers and tool fabricators. Develops and executes plan to gain new competencies

  • Benchmark with other plants in the group through the Process Networks

  • Participate in Technology Development (TD) initiatives

Specific software knowledge requirements include:

  • Experience in Catia/Creo/AutoCAD/Sketchup software

  • Knowledge of 2D/3D drawing

  • Knowledge of Mechanical design and engineering

  • Knowledge of ENOVIA/PDMLink software

  • Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to manage change

  • Excellent computer skills; proficient in Excel, Power Point and Word

  • Extensive knowledge of engineering concepts, manufacturing, the product, production standards and efficiency optimization tools; process oriented

  • Proven ability to react to issues impacting production with a sense of urgency, promptly assessing the issue and developing a feasible action plan and following it through to successful completion

  • Project management skills

  • Experience in a team-based environment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proven ability to review and apply technical specifications and requirements to the assembly operation.

  • Possesses strong analytical skills and demonstrated focus on process and Lean Manufacturing concepts

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering

  • Preferred: 5-7 years of manufacturing experience or equivalent with a focus on engineering and production
