Volvo Group Director of Continuous Improvement DIRVPS3 in Macungie, Pennsylvania


As the Director, Continuous Improvement and member of the MACK’s site Leadership Team, you will partner with the team to leverage cross functional relationships and define and execute operational strategies and tactics for breakthrough levels of continuous improvement and Change Management methodologies around on-time deliveries, lead time reductions, process improvements, and manufacturing capabilities. This position will be focused on both leading our MPS (Mack Production System) journey in the deployment of proven techniques in accordance with the WCM (World Class Manufacturing) model and will assist in the execution of change throughout the organization. You will focus on achieving improvements that lead to driving cost out of the businesses through more effective business processes, elimination of non-value added or duplicate efforts, waste and other related defects in the business processes. This role is responsible for converting the Mack Team members & leaders to a continuous improvement mindset supporting stated business objectives for Customer Satisfaction, Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost and Culture) and delivering significant quantifiable process improvements and financial benefits.

As the Director of Continuous Improvement, you will have enterprise wide responsibility for executing the MPS vision and serve as our change practitioner on significant change initiatives as required.

You will have the opportunity to lead a cross functional team of MPS and Business Process experts on our journey to world class performance through the application of Lean Six Sigma principles, tools and methodologies. This position requires a hands-on experienced individual with a good balance of technical, business and leadership competencies. As a hands-on working coach/director, you will have the opportunity to work with and learn all aspects of the business.


  • Lead the MPS vision by developing and executing key strategies that engage the membership and deliver results

  • Own the “standard work” process, culture and implementation across Mack’s MPS Operating rhythm

  • Work with Business Units, lead the development and track a robust pipeline of productivity projects

  • Lead cross-functional projects and initiatives to deliver process improvements, lean strategies, and best practices in the areas of lean manufacturing, six sigma, kaizen, etc.

  • Consult and advise leadership on process and performance improvement opportunities that will foster growth, improved customer satisfaction, and operational efficiencies

  • Impact and influence the organization both through the “continuous improvement sphere,” as well as through interactions and involvement with other teams and leaders throughout the company

  • A solid understanding of the implications associated with any large transformational change

  • Create and curate change tools to be integrated into other change methodologies across the organization

  • Develop communications to the appropriate stakeholder groups that messages the various actions/results/intentions of change projects

  • Conduct manager coaching on the introduction of organizational changes and role of the people side of change

  • Collaborate with managers to create resistance management plans and action items to prevent these behaviors

  • Assist Training Director in understanding various roles being impacted by the change and assist in articulating a learning curriculum that meets the needs of the end user

  • Lead critical initiatives requiring significant strategic and change support to frame key issues, conduct analyses, and test potential solutions prior to designing broader implementation plans

  • Create company-wide ownership of the MPS way of working

  • Develop MPS metrics , deliver results and showcase success

  • Play a hands-on role in designing best-in-class processes that eliminate waste, variability, errors and non-value added steps

  • Facilitate value stream mapping of “Critical to Business” processes

  • Drive the development of the training curriculum for new hires in MPS and for the ongoing technical training needs across the multiple roles within Mack

  • Maintain a MPS curriculum and “tool box” so that all tools are consistently taught and used properly across the company

  • Promote the use of project management tools Education

Preferred Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Engineering; Master’s Degree in Business or Engineering preferred

  • Current practical World Class Manufacturing Experience

  • Two or more years of experience with Change Management Framework

  • Minimum of 7 years of Direct Management experience

  • 10 years of proven process improvement implementation, Lean Six Sigma experience preferred

  • Experience with Project Management, Lean Manufacturing, ISO, DMAIC, Six Sigma, Pareto Analysis, Data Optimization, Floor Layout and Training

  • Strategic planning experience

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully facilitate cross-functional projects in a team based environment

  • Drive engagement at the department supervisor level to ensure all departments maintain 2x their targeted variable cost improvement for any given quarter in their CI pipelines

  • Black Belt in LEAN or Six Sigma Certification preferred
