Volvo Group Vehicle Geometrical Architect (Lead Engineer) in Greensboro, North Carolina

Position Description

The purpose of this job is to provide Vehicle Geometrical Architecture to engineering to fulfill the following:

  • Serves as a specialist within the Vehicle Geometrical Architect area, requiring limited direction and supervision. Additional duties are within the area of Geometry Assurance Expertise

  • Lead, plan, develop and completes complex packaging projects in CAD within an area of assignment

  • Create time plans for the Geometrical Architect and Geometrical Assurance deliveries of components/assemblies/systems etc. with respect to the project timelines

  • Heavy emphasis is placed on expertise; knowledge; originality; analysis; and significant interaction within internal departments and external organizations

  • Assists with manpower and material usage in meeting budgetary/cost constraints, deadlines, goals, and objectives for the primary area of assignment or project assigned

  • Serves as a consultant/contact worldwide for their areas of expertise

  • Authority to take the necessary measures in order to accomplish imposed responsibility

Responsibilities

  • Deliver quality secured geometry towards the projects. To solve packaging/geometry issues between different commodities. This includes geometric support to tolerances, main dimensions, and bodybuilder suitability

  • Set up the cross-functional packaging organization and Packaging Issue Log (PIL)

  • Propose solutions for complete offer scenario/packaging to meet application and customer requirements

  • Discuss strategies with Platform management and commodities for a long-term roadmap of the architecture of his area

  • Analyze and propose common solutions that can support all brands in order to minimize part numbers and maximize common parts (CAST)

  • Maintain awareness of other projects which may impact your current projects or areas of authority

  • Give input regarding geometrical matters to stakeholders (Global Manufacturing, Aftermarket, and commodities (ex. Cab, Chassis, Electrical, Powertrain), from a complete vehicle perspective

  • Build geometry verification plan (virtual builds, physical builds B/C, DMU structure)

  • Show progress (by PIL) and status for all geometry related activities

  • Identify A-interface impacts and balance project geometrical requirements with platform requirements according to A-interface process whilst reducing diversity if possible

  • Drive Digital Mock-up (DMU structure) deliveries according to DMU logic

  • Ensure the PAP deliveries for their area of authority and input to Lead GA / Architect prior to each gate

  • Prepare the knowledge management document for his area

Duties

The Geometrical Architect has the authority to take all necessary decisions in order to fulfill the responsibilities:

  • Take necessary geometrical decisions in a project or a packaging study

  • Decisions should be within project pre-requisites, frame/scope. This is to achieve agreed project requirements balanced with platform requirements

  • Arbitrate issues which are brought up between commodities, and escalate the issue if needed, write Protus if/when necessary

  • Determine geometrical verification methods that should apply to a given project, request packaging vehicles and/or physical mock-up taking into account area complexities, time and cost

  • Propose and initiate solutions in order to reduce A-Interface and vehicle module diversity

  • Influence on concept selection. Rate the best concept/technical solution from vehicle and platform point of view

  • Initiate geometrical investigations to be made by commodities and/or supporting geometrical architects

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree; Master's degree preferred

  • Competence in ProE/Creo is preferred but not necessary; experience on a CAD system is beneficial

  • A degree of experience with tooling and part check/inspection fixtures is beneficial

  • At least 5 years of experience in product development projects within automotive and/or in commercial vehicles

  • A firm understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing philosophy and applications

  • Have a good ability to communicate both in written and spoken English

  • Must be able to lead and direct teams cross-functionally

  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of products

  • Must be able and willing to travel domestically and internationally
