SML North America (NA) is a part of SML and has about 1,000 employees across the United States, Canada and Mexico. We operate the Central Distribution Center in Byhalia, MS as well as Regional Distribution Centers across the NA region.
The Analytical Supply Chain Data Modeling Intern will primarily be responsible for developing a forecast simulation tool for mass level analysis of Aftermarket. This entails working with the Process Development Department and Demand Inventory Planning Department.
Volvo is looking to expand data analysis capabilities in regards to improving planning quality, in particular from a forecasting perspective. We hope to accomplish this through finding correlations between Forecast Accuracy and other elements in Supply Chain such as, but not limited, to inventory, supplier performance, warehouse operations, etc… We would also like to build a strong connection with academia in order to benefit from latest research and development findings, and in return give opportunities for the academia to work with a global company such as Volvo.
The internship position is for the Spring of 2019, and the specific work days and hours will be flexible, but agreed upon with the hiring manager.
Understand the business requirements from a software development standpoint in order to build a tool which will enable Volvo to maximize its Forecast Accuracy.
Conduct an analytical deep-dive on the current forecasting methods applied to generate the consensus demand forecast at varying hierarchical levels
Compare as-is forecasting methodology and metrics against a set of purely scientific assortment of statistical algorithms
Explore demand volume history and identify unusual patterns (i.e. outliers) to measure their effect on forecasting
Generate robust forecast accuracy metrics leveraging back-casting tools
Develop an analysis tool with existing Volvo data solutions and expand on it from a mathematical and statistical perspective.
Build Regression Analysis models.
Cross-functional/departmental accountability of forecast accuracy
Correlations between FCQ Vs.:
Availability, Inventory, Delivery Precision, Workload, warehouse, transport cost, etc.
Create a manageable solution base.
Weekly Writing Assignments: Brief written summaries of the learning experiences and project updates will be required.
Project Presentations: Formal project presentations will be required to be presented to peers, management, and senior leaders within the organization.
Performance Feedback: Throughout the entire experience, the manager will provide verbal and written feedback on work performance. At the end of the internship, each intern will be given a formal written evaluation based on their work performance.
Essential Skills and Minimum Education Requirements
Applicants must be currently enrolled and pursuing a Master Degree or higher in Mathematics or Statistics with a concentration on Data Analytics at an accredited school, and have completed 12 semester hours prior to the start of the internship.
Applicants should be interested in pursuing a professional career in a Supply Chain related field with a specific interest in the automotive industry.
Solid analytical and problem solving skills.
Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5.
Applicants should be proficient in Microsoft Office Applications (Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint),
Must be expert in R, and be proficient in Python. (Any additional data analytics qualification is beneficial)
