Summary

The purpose of this position is to oversee and direct all Design Engineering related activities associated with the creation, development, and maintenance of all engine and transmission related product designs. This includes global responsibility and accountability for product costs, product design integrity including form, fit and function, compliance to all applicable marine regulations, and “bill of material” content and structure. The incumbent needs to possess a comprehensive understanding of the industrial process including the relationships between Engineering, Purchasing and Production as well as the influence of the product creation process has on the customer care and spare parts functions. The incumbent has overall financial accountability for the project related product development budget and expenses and (in cooperation with purchasing and manufacturing), maintaining control over standard cost development.

Core Responsibilities

Oversee and direct all design engineering activities related to the:

  • Design and development of new gasoline engines/ transmissions and related products

  • Maintenance of existing gasoline engine / transmission and related products

  • Advanced engineering projects

  • Design, development and maintenance of VPA Parts and Accessories Products

This includes responsibility for:

  • Perform design, testing/validation and/or development of internal combustion engines and related projects. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, accountability/ownership, adherence to formal internal and external standards, procedures and processes, and accurate, acceptable documentation and report writing

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable marine regulations

  • Integrate multiple CAE tools including engine cycle simulation and computational fluid dynamics into the development of future products

  • Author complete test orders for in-house as well as off site test facilities

  • Support Advanced Engineering by quickly gaining a working understanding of new technology

  • Use knowledge of thermodynamics and physics as they apply to internal combustion engines and drive train systems

  • Use problem solving skills to play a support role when cooperating with Reliability Engineering regarding current product

  • Planning, controlling, coordinating and/or monitoring all activities within the product creation phase of the development process including (but not necessarily limited to) research, inventing, development sourcing, production preparation, emission regulations, etc.

  • Working with Product Planning to develop suitable “Product Profiles” and “Target Descriptions” and preparing, as required, the “Project Description”

  • Preparing, as required, documentation defining estimates of development costs (R and D hours and direct expenses), start costs (production tooling and production preparation) and product costs (standard cost of purchased material and labor)

  • Overseeing the creation of detailed development plans including quality planning and time schedules for all applicable product creation activities

  • Overseeing the development of product characteristics to ensure they are in accordance with the agreed targets

  • Assuring adherence to the project timelines, and development and investment cost targets

  • Monitoring the development of the product cost to ensure it’s in accordance with the agreed targets

  • Ensuring conformance to design quality and environmental targets

  • Ensuring the continuous exchange of information during the product creation phase

  • Conducting all activities in accordance with the ISO Quality system framework

  • Serve as mentor to VPA personnel regarding Volvo Penta processes and Volvo Standards

  • Working with Human Resources to further enhance the intellectual competence of subordinates

  • Perform other duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned by management to support Volvo Penta goals and objectives

Education and Experience

  • BS degree in Engineering or Program Management

  • Minimum (10) ten years’ experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment. Including experience in project management with an emphasis on Design Engineering

  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of the Volvo Penta Processes and Volvo Standards

  • A demonstrated understanding of the overall Product Development process including product planning, product creation, and product launch, and their relation to the marketing, sales, logistics, and after-market support functions.

  • A demonstrated understanding of the industrial process including the links between Engineering, Purchasing, and production and their influence on product cost and quality

  • Preferred experience with the design of stern drive marine propulsion systems

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work flexible hours in order to meet deadlines

  • Mobility to meet with others in their work locations

  • Speaking Swedish fluently preferred

  • Willingness to travel
