The internship role provides students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a professional environment, and to support/promote the graduate's career goals through contact with professionals in their field of study. The internship experience enables students to participate in professional activities for Volvo Penta by working on important and innovative projects. Internships are structured learning experiences where interns and our full-time professionals work together on projects within their selected organization. The internship allows students to integrate knowledge and skills in a manner that is mutually beneficial to the student and Volvo Penta.
Description of Role
This position is responsible for assisting the Human Resources department through various tasks and projects which may include, but not be limited to employee relations, training and development, safety and wellness initiatives, and recruitment efforts.
Because this position has contact with the full spectrum of employees good listening, communications, and interpersonal relationship skills are critically important. This position requires a very strong attention to detail, high level of customer focus, motivation to meet deadlines, and ability to approach issues with a sense of urgency. Project/time management, decision-making, teamwork and facilitation skills are also necessary.
Prepare internal communications, including quarterly VGAS news bulletin, monthly articles highlighting employee events, diversity awareness, and posting HR-related announcements
Work on projects to include job description updates, rewards and recognitions
Assist with recruiting efforts. Attend career fairs at local universities as needed to promote Volvo Penta as an employer of choice
Support the interview process – revise and update guide/questions based on best practices. Prepare packets for panel interviews
Participate in planning and preparation of employee engagement activities to include company events, workshops, diversity and inclusion, and training and development as related to Human Resources
Provide updates/analysis on action planning activities to support improving employee engagement
Compile and coordinate data to research potential HR-related projects to improve company branding and promote Volvo Penta as an employer of choice
Participate and track safety walk opportunities. Complete an accurate safety inventory for designated items and review, update Safety Data Sheets. Research ISO Processes and best practices
Performs other duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned by management to support Volvo Penta goals and objectives
Strong verbal and written communication and telephone skills
Excellent organizational and analytical skills with an acute attention to detail
Exercise a high level of confidentiality in working with sensitive information
Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite to include PowerPoint, Word and Excel is required
An eagerness to learn, ability to work independently, and readiness for responsibility
Minimum Education & Experience
Applicants must be current students that are scheduled to graduate after May 2019
Applicants must be enrolled and pursuing a BA, BS, MS, or MA degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field at an accredited school, and have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours of undergraduate work prior to the start of the internship
History of academic achievement: GPA of 3.0 or higher required
Participation in school or extracurricular activities and experience in leadership roles is a plus
Intern must provide their own transportation to work
Intern must provide their own living accommodations in the local area
