Role Mission

The purpose of this job is to provide expertise, internally and externally, that will ensure proper industrial engine application and sales.

Core Responsibilities

Sales Engineering

  • Advise OEMs and Volvo Penta of the Americas Industrial Engine Distributors on engine application and configuration for industrial diesel engines throughout U.S. and Canada

  • Secure knowledge of EPA legislation to ensure VP engines are installed meeting legal requirements

  • Together with OEMs and Sales Managers, create and own the specification in our system, ProSales

  • Recommend power system components and configuration and develop performance projections for industrial diesel installations

  • Authorize unique engine equipment combinations; coordinate with Volvo Penta Sweden Manager of Sales Engineering for review and approval

  • Develop installation and application methods and tools. Provide installation guidance, provide relevant technical data and develop any needed technical documentation

  • Perform formal installation reviews and provide reports for distributors and OEMs on engine installations as needed or as requested by customers

  • Provide feedback on installation and application issues to Volvo Penta Sweden Product Planning and Product Development

  • Raise cases for new development to existing Volvo Penta Engines in the Volvo Penta MAC system

  • Develop and maintain industrial diesel order matrices

  • Conduct distributor sales and application training to ensure that the sales and application performance of the distributor are in alignment and quality expected by Volvo Penta

  • Work on special projects as necessary to resolve complaints and product problems

  • Communicate and follow up distributor, OEM, and end user problems and complaints, to Volvo Penta of the Americas service department and communicate same to management

Sales / Marketing Support

  • Application engineering support to develop and implement plans and programs designed to meet sales goals and increase market penetration at targeted distributors and key customers

  • Interface with key decision makers at Engineering, Purchasing and Management groups within targeted industrial diesel accounts

  • Communicate to sales the technical benefits of Volvo Penta products and services to maximize market opportunities

  • Communicate competitor product and program information within Volvo Penta of the Americas and Sweden

  • Ensure the Industrial engine inventory in Volvo Penta of the Americas distribution center is maintained to correct specification and fulfills legal requirements to meet customer requirements

  • Attend seminars, expos and trade shows as required in order to provide applications support for Volvo Penta of the Americas, distributors or OEM sales efforts

  • Ensure that VP industrial diesel engines are technically appropriately positioned on targeted distributor and OEM price lists

  • Ensure Sales and Marketing maintains a high technical awareness of Volvo Penta products to enable correct messaging to customers and in Industry publications

  • Communicate technical benefits of our products and services to OEM and distributors

Skills & Knowledge Required

  • Thorough technical knowledge and understanding of the application of diesel engines for generator and variable speed industrial engines, both mechanical and electrical/electronic

  • Minimum five (5) years relevant experience in the technical application of industrial diesel engines through OEM and distribution networks

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written with demonstrated experience doing formal presentations to medium and large size groups of dealers or customers (10 to 50 people)

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the Industrial engine applications field
