Our job is to develop, manage and optimize the Service Market supply chain (aftermarket parts distribution to dealer network) for all Volvo Group brands and joint ventures. The scope of Service Market Logistics’ functions include: Supply Chain Optimization, Inventory Management, Distribution Center Operations, Customs & Trade, and Transport Optimization. We develop logistics solutions to ensure the highest parts availability, delivery precision and quality everywhere around the world. SML North America (NA) has over 1,000 employees across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Our distribution network consists of 2 Central Distribution Centers (Byhalia, MS and Columbus, OH) as well as 8 Regional Distribution Centers across the North American region.

We have an exciting opportunity for the right individual as the Human Resources Manager for our central Distribution Center in Byhalia, MS. This Byhalia DC is a 1 million square foot facility located approximately 25 miles southeast of Memphis, TN and employs approximately 575 employees. This position reports to the Director of the Byhalia CDC and is part of the site management team.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Advise, counsel, and coach managers on workforce and organization related matters regarding:

  • Compensation and Benefits

  • Performance Management

  • Position Descriptions, functional structure, and career paths

  • Competence Management and Development

  • Talent Management

  • Workforce Planning and skill mapping

  • Complex employee situations/issues

  • All labor relations situations/issues

  • Identification of and compliance with work rules and work processes

  • Develop and execute on action plans following the HR strategies, policies, and a Continuous Improvement Roadmap decided/agreed for Human Resources

  • Ensure a strong site leadership team with a plan for initial and ongoing competence development and training, as well as succession planning

  • Strive for Best Practices in the processes of recruitment, selection, orientation, training, and competence development. Identify new processes when needed, ensuring consistency with other DC sites

  • Manage local payroll, workers’ compensation, and attendance processes

  • Promote positive employee and union relations in the work environment. Champion the Volvo culture as well as ensure alignment of management actions with Volvo Group values and principles. Act as a change agent to support management in the roll out of new organization initiatives

  • Ensure manager actions adhere to employment-related Volvo policies and practices as well as federal and local regulations

  • Lead the local HR team, and ensure their performance and development

  • Specific to Labor Relations:

  • Provide counsel and guidance to management with respect to the labor agreements and employee & union relations

  • Interact with union officials as necessary to further promote a joint effective working relationship focused on achieving business objectives

  • Assure records, files and models are maintained as necessary to sustain management's position with respect to legal, contractual and business needs and requirements

  • Interact with centralized labor relations function and other HR functions

Minimum Competence, Education, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or related discipline or equivalent experience. HR certification highly preferred

  • 5-10 years’ experience in human resources, including at least 3 years of managing an HR team and/or function and at least 3 years of direct labor relations responsibility in a mid- to large-size unionized facility, preferably dealing with the United Automobile Workers (UAW)

  • Ability to visualize, build, and maintain a competent, effective, pro-active HR team and function

  • Experience in Volvo HR processes and tools as well as a strong understanding of business challenges

  • Demonstrated strong abilities in the Volvo Leadership competencies are required, including those related to Strategic Thinking, Inspiring Leadership, Courage & Integrity, Execution, and Self-Management

  • Thorough knowledge of US employment law and HR professional practices

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills (including effective presentation skills) with the ability to interact comfortably at all levels of the organization

  • Ability and interest to build a strong company culture

  • Ability to coach managers and employees in handling various employment and management related issues (change management, conflict resolution, leadership development)

  • Ability to facilitate meetings with diverse groups, resolve conflicts, and support resolution to a positive outcome

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced team environment striving towards operational excellence guided by the Volvo Values and the Code of Conduct is an advantage

Necessary technical/functional/language skills

  • As all documentation is in English, proficiency in the English language is required

  • Must be able to communicate efficiently and effectively within a multi-cultural and international environment

  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally (occasional)

  • Proficient in MS Office; SAP experience is favorable
